Features that matter most
A curbless or low-threshold shower. The floor is recessed or sloped so there is nothing to step over, with a linear drain along one edge. We built one at East Avenue.
Blocking behind the tile. Solid wood between the studs lets grab bars be mounted securely anywhere you might need them, today or in ten years. It costs little during a remodel and a lot afterward.
A bench and a handheld shower, with the valve placed so it can be reached while seated. Musket Rim includes a built-in shower bench.
Around the rest of the room
A comfort-height toilet, a wider doorway where the framing allows it, lever handles, better lighting including a night light, and a vanity with knee space if a seated user needs it. Non-slip floor tile matters as much as the shower itself; small tile with more grout lines or a tile rated for wet floors helps.

Can you build a curbless shower in my existing bathroom?
In most Austin bathrooms, yes. The floor is recessed or built up so it slopes to a drain. We confirm it on site, especially on slabs and in condos.
Should I install grab bars now?
At least install the blocking now. Grab bars can go on today or later, and blocking behind the tile means they can be mounted securely wherever they are needed.
Do you follow ADA standards for home bathrooms?
ADA standards apply to public spaces, not private homes. We build to your needs and to code, and we can follow an occupational therapist's recommendations.
